About Y. Ali

Based in Chicago, Y. Ali is an artist whose practice spans over a decade in visual art and music, as well as community organizing within the arts. As an organizer, Yasmin led programming in Chicago for ten years that provided platforms and workshops for underrepresented artists. Passionate about the preserving the right to your own narrative, she also established partnerships with theaters and other nonprofits for this work.
In her oil paintings, she explores the moments of identity creation as well as the elements that comprise it through a distinct approach to texture, layers and reimagined landscapes. Coming from a background rich in origins - Muslim, Self-Taught Artist, Mother, First Generation- Yasmin has always been drawn to the internal landscapes of our identity that are unique to all of us. Her paintings visualize moments in that landscape and explore themes of identity masking, creation and destruction. Drawing from her background in multimedia installation and singing, Yasmin brings a multidisciplinary sensitivity to her painting practice, allowing each piece to resonate with the complexity of lived experience.
